PLA

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the workhorse of 3D printing, and is by far the most common filament. It's cheap, available in lots of colours and easy to print. It has the added bonus of being plant based, made out of starches from plants such as corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava.

This filament is perfect for quick protoypes, aesthetic models, toys etc. It can also be sanded and painted.

PLA is not ideal for functional parts under mechanical stress, and does not have much flexibility, therefore can be quite brittle. It is also not ideal for long term outdoor exposure as it will start to degrade.

It is available in a standard glossy finish, or matte.
